Nissan supports youth leadership and STEM Skills development event for 200 students in Ayutthaya and Rayong
BANGKOK, Thailand (June 19, 2018) – Nissan Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd. recently sponsored 200 students in grades 10 and 11 from four secondary schools in Ayutthaya and Rayong, Thailand, to attend a hands-on three-day youth camp, designed to build leadership skills that integrate STEM.
The camp is part of the Youth Leadership program, a partnership between Nissan, CARE International Japan, and the Raks Thai Foundation, which aims to help some 1,200 students develop leadership skills through teamwork, planning, and leader/follower activities.
The students were divided into groups to work as a team, make plans, and then role play as a follower or a leader, and then present to the rest of the class. This will help these students apply what they have learned from these activities in future leadership and life situations.
The program also brought STEM education to life at the camp and incorporated integrated STEM learning experiences through hands-on activities. “In the past, the four components under STEM were taught separately, and students sometimes struggled to find the connections between these. This program aims to help students learn to integrate the four components into a single important discipline. Nissan’s long-term commitment to youth education has been instrumental in driving this and has had a significant positive impact in these communities,” said Sutirat Kojchasawad, Raks Thai’s Program Officer.
Peter Galli, Nissan’s vice president of communications for Thailand, said that Nissan’s support highlights the importance of cooperation among private and humanitarian organization to ensure that young Thai students have the learning tools and skills they need to learn and grow. “I am very proud of the enthusiasm showed by our employees to volunteer so as to engage and support the program.”
Thamanoon Sungkhawan, General Manager of network development for Nissan in Thailand, who ran a leadership mindset training for students during the camp, said: “I have always been passionate about teaching and willing to do anything I can to help children find inspiration, and then develop the skills, to grow.”
This Youth Leadership training is already paying off. “Usually I am very shy and do not feel like interacting with people. But this camp really helped me become someone new. I have more self-confidence and can lead a team. I will be able to apply the STEM concept in my school projects very effectively. I am very impressed with this program and will ask my friends to apply next year,” said Thanyatorn Thanyajarone, a student from Wangnoi School in Ayutthaya.
Through its sponsorship of the Young Leadership Development program in Thailand, Nissan will continue its collaboration with the Raks Thai Foundation to not just strengthen the skills of Thai students, but also help build dynamic leaders who will contribute back to their communities and the kingdom.
